How To Gain The Power To Create Intense Musical Emotion

Have you ever wondered how your favorite musicians make such great music? The answer is this: They fully understand how musical emotion works, and how to use this to create intense emotions in YOU while you listen to them. Understanding musical expression is key to becoming a great guitar player and musician. When you control emotion in music, you will gain the power to greatly affect the listener's experience.

Most guitarists want to be able to express themselves better with their guitar playing; however, the majority of guitar players have no idea how to actually practice this skill. This leads to a lot of time being wasted on practicing guitar in a way that does not produce big results. The solution to this problem is to develop a more accurate fundamental understanding of how to develop creativity in music.

Many guitar players try to enhance their musical creativity skills by searching the music of their favorite bands for cool riffs and guitar ideas and playing them over and over. This is certainly an enjoyable activity to do when playing guitar, but in reality it does not do very much to help you to learn musical expression. If you spend a great deal of time on this, you will be missing out on the two most critical parts of being able to create emotion in music:

You have to understand the manner in which great guitar players and musicians 'think'. More specifically, this means determining WHY they choose the specific notes and ideas that they do. This is something that you cannot learn if you simply copy the "notes" of your favorite songs and guitar solos. Rather than just playing the same notes as other musicians, you must spend time thinking about the emotions you want to express, and what specific musical choices you need to make to achieve that goal. Once you gain this level of musical creativity, you will develop your own unique sound as it relates to the ideas and emotions that come from your mind.

You must know how specific emotions can be created and expressed by making certain musical choices while composing music or playing a guitar solo. Additionally, you need to be able to make your audience understand exactly what emotions you want to express with your music, without having to say a single word. Many guitarists struggle greatly with doing this and as a result they end up limited to only playing the music of others without ever really expressing themselves through their guitar playing.

There is a big divide between most guitar players when it comes to music theory. Many people avoid music theory, because they believe that it is a bunch of rules that restrict their freedom of musical expression. Other people think that music theory is required for knowing how to make music. Both of these views are incomplete when comes to the big picture of the purpose of music theory.

So what is the real purpose of music theory? Music theory is a tool to accurately describe the effects of musical ideas on the emotions of whoever listens to a piece of music.

Change Your Mindset About Music Theory

Understanding how music theory really works likely means changing your current idea of what music theory is used for. Forget about music theory as simply explaining the function of scales and chords in music. Instead, music theory is all about explaining why we feel certain emotions when certain ideas are used. Knowing this is instrumental to you developing great musical expression skills.

Here is an example to illustrate how you can use this idea. As a guitar teacher, I spend a lot of time showing my students how to increase their skills with creativity. One of the exercises I use is to have my guitar students write down specific emotions they want to express in their guitar music. Then, I have them write down the specific ways to accomplish these musical expressions using a variety of music theory ideas.

Here are the most important skills you will get from learning music theory:

You will gain an understanding of exactly WHY you enjoy listening to certain kinds of music. This will allow you to create the same emotions that you get from the music of your favorite artists without copying/cloning their exact guitar licks and solos. This skill will greatly enhance your musical creativity.

You will be able to create music in a way that much more accurately expresses your ideas and emotions. It is common for most musicians (who are trying to write a song) to simply improvise on their instrument until something sounds "good enough." This songwriting method is very limited and does not bring a lot of results consistently. However, if you have the knowledge of how to express specific emotions in music, it will be much easier to write great songs with less effort.

Music theory gives you all the equipment you need to put together new musical ideas much more quickly, without having to rely on remembering the way something sounds. Having the ability to associate specific feelings and emotions with the musical tools needed to express them allows you to compose and organize entire sections of your music on paper (or by ear) before even playing any notes.

When you understand exactly which musical choices to make in order to accurately convey a certain musical emotion, you will be able to anticipate how people will interpret your music.

What Do You Need To Do Right Now?

If your goal is to become highly skillful at musical expression, then you need to follow these steps to start achieving this on guitar:

Expand your current thinking about music theory by watching the video in the link at the end of this article.

Remember that although music theory is extremely important for maximizing your creativity, you need to also develop a variety of musical skills to achieve the most freedom in your musical expression.

Understand that music theory skill is not developed by merely taking a certain number of music theory lessons, but rather by your ability to use your current knowledge to accurately bring out your emotions through your music. Use the exercise mentioned earlier in this article to see how well you can use theoretical music concepts to make music that is consistent with the ideas you want to express. If you struggle with this, this either means that your music theory skills are low or (most commonly) you do not understand how to use what you know in music theory in an actual musical context. If you play guitar while integrating together music theory and musical expression, you will notice a HUGE surge in creativity!

The most important thing I want you to take away from this article is the way I have defined music theory, and how you can use this understanding to enhance your own musical expression on guitar. If you keep all these things in mind, you will be able to take your musical creativity to a new level.

How to Find Production Music for Any Project

If you are a producer, director or project coordinator for any type of film, television or video project, you know how challenging it can be to find production music that encapsulates fully the important themes and the message of your project. Not only is production music and background music for film and television often incredibly expensive, but the time required to shop around to the multitude of music providers or composers is also extensive. And since musical originality is often a concern, typically producers with limited budgets that can't afford to pay a composer to create a score of music specifically for their film, television show or video project, but can buy popular music or previously used film scores run the risk of hearing the very same production music and background music they paid so dearly for in another film weeks or months later.

Many film and television professionals that do not have multi-million dollar budgets wonder what to look for in high quality production music. Because the market for background music of all varieties, particularly those that claim to be "affordable" and "original" can be so inundated with poor-sounding, purely imitative scores and individual musical pieces, weeding through the rocks to find the gems can be a painstaking process for which no one has the time or energy.

The following are four important elements to look for when shopping for the right production music and background music for your film, television or video project:

1. Excellent sound quality. This may seem like an obvious element, because it is often the most immediately noticeable when listening to good music, but many don't think about sound quality unless it is very bad. If you are a producer or director, you probably have an understanding of sound quality in film or television, but may be less certain of your ability to gauge it in production music and background music. If you don't have the benefit of having a musical expert on staff, you can certainly gauge the quality of the music yourself by thinking about a few important aspects. If the music has been recorded under the best conditions, you will hear a perfect balance between bass and treble, as well as consistent sound and textures regardless of the volume at which you are listening to the music. You will be able to pick out the individual sounds of different instruments and not just a muddle of sounds, some fairly indistinguishable.

2. Vivid, true instrumentation. Some production music that claims to be "affordable" sounds more like bad elevator music or music that has been recorded in a dark room by someone's younger brother using a cheap synthesizer from the 1980's. Even if the music is synthesized (and as a professional with a limited budget, you should understand that sometimes it has to be in order to keep costs down), it does not have to sound fake and hollow. Synthesizers are capable of producing instrument sounds that are true-to-life, and the best production music and background music will have depth and approach if not fully embody the richness and intricacies of real violins, cellos, brass, woodwinds, electric guitars and percussion. If you can tell the instruments are merely simulated, your audience will know as well.

3. Originality. This one seems like something obvious to look for in great production music, but is actually much more complicated than at first thought. If you can't afford popular music, or don't want to risk hearing the music you've selected in other films or television programs that have nothing to do with your unique project, you want to find background music that is exciting and innovative, but also makes some musical sense and has continuity, and most importantly, fits the overall feeling of your production. First-rate production music will have technical accuracy and stylistic importance, but will be special and able to stand alone as a piece of good music. Still, as a producer, director or project coordinator you will want something original that still invokes the attitude and style of your film and perhaps even reminds audiences of the popular pieces of music you could not afford.

4. Well-written and -performed music by artists with real and verifiable credentials. Production music providers, even the smaller ones, that are legitimate and of the finest quality will provide credentials for the artists and composers they enlist, and will have full and confirmable information about all aspects of their production music. Film and television professionals should be prepared to ask specific questions of these providers if this history is not readily available, because sometimes a very new production music provider will have talented musicians involved, but not necessarily yet have the resume to prove it. If the provider's music has been used in other films and projects, you should ask for a list and make sure the projects are similar or at least remotely relevant in style and quality to your production.

Everyone has had the experience of buying popular music, even at cheaper prices, only to hear it in every film that comes out in the same year. Many producers and directors are thinking about alleviating the struggle of searching for production music by turning to providers of royalty free music and royalty free production music to fulfill their complex needs. Royalty free music and buyout music offers an excellent alternative to the hassle of searching for the right production music that fits a tight budget. Clients of royalty free production music companies pay a one-time, low fee and gain unlimited use of the pieces of music.

How to Find Novelty Music Boxes for the Music Box and Antique Collector

For the music box and antique collector, there is an almost endless array of music boxes to collect. From carousel music boxes to ballerina music boxes, and antique music boxes to children's jewelry boxes, there is a large variety to choose from. There also is a specialty area for the music box and antique collector to consider. The area is novelty musical mechanisms. Four top novelty items to consider are furniture musical mechanisms, household items, clocks and wallets, and the automata.

Furniture Musical Mechanisms

In the 19th and early 20th century, many leading manufacturers placed musical mechanisms in furniture. Some of the most popular items their mechanisms were placed in were full sized decorative tables with a compartment for stationary or playing cards. Examples of furniture musical mechanisms include a child's rocking chair, which was made with a musical mechanism, mounted on it, and wooden chairs whose movements, operated by a hinged seat, would play when someone sat down. These types of items are rarely and clearly fitted with a musical mechanism so they can be easily overlooked.

Household Utensils

Candy and serving dished have been made with musical movements. In addition, elegant teapots with designs such as cats, Victorian houses, and cows have also been made. Lazy Susan's with 18-note movements, and even musical liquor decanters with fancy styles from golf bags to cars are available. These types of novelty items would be fun additions to the collection of the music box and antique collector.

Clocks and Watches

Numerous table clocks have been made with musical movements. However, when the music box and antique collector goes to an antique shop or second hand store, they might miss these special items since the musical mechanisms may not be working. Simple cleaning and oiling can get the table clocks and up and running.

Many of the cylinder music boxes were also placed in pocket watches and their cases. While early examples are rare and highly valuable, modern ones can be found.

Automata

The best automata were made in and around Paris during the last part of the 19th century. The musical movements many times were concealed in the landscape based in the body of the automation.

All kinds of unique automata were made. Among the figures that were manufactured were dolls, monkeys, jesters, and children doing all manner of complicated things. One interesting example is an extraordinary automation manufactured by the French companyRoullet and Decamps. The figure was a Pierrot and the moon. The moon, made from paper paper mache, has a painted face with brown eyes and tongue that moves from side to side. The Pierrot raises a leg, lifts one arm and moves as if playing a guitar. Such a rare piece, despite the expense, would be a highly valuable asset to the collection of the music box and antique collector.

While carousel music boxes, ballerina music boxes, antique music boxes, and children's jewelry boxes are examples of music boxes some music box and antique collectors may already have, adding novelty music boxes and musical movements such as the ones addressed in this article would make their collector even more unique. Why not begin that search today?

How to Avoid Music Marketing Information Overload!

I want to give you a little mantra you can use in your music marketing that goes like this...

"I will spend 80% of my time producing amazing music, 15% music marketing and then 5% learning music marketing material."

This is kind of like cutting off my nose to spite my face because I produce a lot of music marketing content myself, but if you spend your whole time eating up all the information it's very hard to ever get around to actually producing any music of worth.

...and marketing crap music has a name...SPAM!

You need to think of all the online courses, guides and books like shiny objects that are pulling you in all different directions and stick with one method until you make it a success. But the fact remains that if you don't actually make any music of worth you are not really a musician.

Have you ever been in music marketing information overload?

This morning I approached my computer with excitement after a long weekend away with the idea that I would pump out a bunch of blog posts and start work on my new ebook. But the plan seems to have gone all wonky...

I opened my Twitter client to see that my friend sent me a link to a great article about how to "sing like a rockstar", and that led to another and then another.

So now I know the theory of killer vocal delivery but I'm no further on with my mission to give you guys the best music marketing info I can muster. :-(

Note to self, never open Twitter in the morning, it's a total bloody time suck!

There are a few things that I have learned over the years (but that I sometimes ignore) which have helped me be more productive in my music marketing and in music in general.

- There are only a very small number of things that really need your time. These include making music and marketing music, forget everything else or do it in short bursts of 25 minutes each day.

- Reading music marketing training does not count as work, you have to actually set a timer and start getting something done as well.

- Work in 50 minute bursts of focused activity with a short break in between. This will help you tap into your body's natural rhythm.

- Don't read your email until 4 O'clock and set a 30 minute timer for this task. Set your band email account to let people know that you are doing this to be more efficient and will get back to them as soon as you can.

- Give yourself monthly commitments. This can be anything from writing blog posts to calling at least 5 music contacts everyday.

What does an unproductive morning look like for a musician?

1. Read 20 articles on music marketing and music industry news.

2. Scanned Facebook and Twitter for 45 minutes and followed links at random.

3. Worked on the design of the music blog on an element that only the perfectionists would notice.

4. Spent 30 minutes in the music forums.

Now the thing is that none of that stuff is bad and you could be forgiven for thinking that you had gotten your hands very dirty in the music business and made a contribution. But unfortunately that is not the case because there was no focus and no planning.

Now let's look at a morning to be proud of...

1. Spent a solid 50 minute period working on 2 new blog posts.

2. 10 minute recharge.

3. Spend another 50 minutes editing blog posts from the previous day and posting to the blog.

4. 30 minute recharge.

5. 50 minutes songwriting / recording a video for YouTube to bring traffic to the blog.

6. 10 minute recharge.

7. Added a couple of emails to the newsletter sequence that automatically goes out to the fans.

8. 30 minute recharge.

9. Called 10 venue managers and booked 2 gigs.

10. 10 minute recharge.

11. Spent 50 minutes answering email and learning new music marketing tactics in my focus area.

If you make a commitment like that everyday you will find that your work increases ten fold and then you can spend the rest of the day reading your email or learning new music marketing stuff if you like.

The problems can come when you use that early burst of energy in the morning to just consume material, and then when you get down to doing some actual work you totally forget what you were doing and have no focus.

It's very hard to start producing great work half way through the day because your body has run out of will power and energy.

To be honest it's all about focus and you really can achieve more in 4 hours than most people get done in a whole day, if you just shut off all that crap pulling you away from the task at hand.

But this article is sooo important

A lot of times you might even find that you are reading something that seems like it's going to change your life, and you will tell yourself that you really are making progress with your music career if you just get the hang of the information.

Well...I will let you into a little secret.

You know enough right now to become a professional musician if you just use what you know and make progress each day. We all know what to do, because it's not rocket science.

So when should you feed your brain?

Now if you have read up to this point you may be thinking that I'm suggesting that you never take the time to learn or plan and that you are always blindly just mashing away at your keyboard. This could not be further from the truth because the mind is kind of like a car, if you are going to run miles and miles you need the right amount of fuel at the right time.

As musicians and music marketeers we need to know what others are saying so that we can form an opinion and add new ideas to our songs and marketing plan.

Here is what I would suggest if you have a full time job:

Find 4 hours a day to work on your music marketing then think of it like this:

- Hour 1 - produce content be it music, blogs or videos.

- Hour 2 - use auto-posting sites like Ping FM, Onlywire, Social Oomph and Tube Mogul to push out your content fast.

- Hour 3 - Edit your new music and blog posts and get it ready for publishing tomorrow.

- Hour 4 - Refuel, use this time to check your email, read blog posts and make notes.

Have a rest...

Another important part of this is that you need to have time each day when you totally turn off from everything and just do something that does not take any brain power at all. Sometimes TV or video games can work. You will not feel guilty now because you will know that you have done great work that day!

I remember when I was making my first album I convinced myself that if I really wanted to make it work I should focus 22 hours a day for the period of the recording and put everything into making it the best thing we ever did. I would spend hours and hours a day just listening to the recordings like some kind of freaky Howard Hughes dude.

NOT GOOD!

But what I did not realize at the time was that a break can actually make things work better and give you more perspective. While on your break you are more likely to think of an amazing new guitar hook or a lyric that is going to resonate deeply with your fans.

If I had just taken a little step back I think I would have made a lot more progress and enjoyed things a lot more.

I now take regular breaks throughout the day and this keeps me focused on the task at hand and my energy levels stay high throughout the day, which is great.

The musical grey zone (A massive problem!)

If you take anything from this article just let it be the fact that you want to avoid spending your whole life eating up all the music marketing goodness without ever making the cake. (Wow I'm churning out the metaphors today like a cow makes milk!)

People think that there is some big secret to this stuff and if they can just learn it everything will be OK and the record labels will take care of them...

THIS IS A MYTH!

I cant' tell you how many times I've spoken with musicians who moan about the following problems:

- I've got a job, so I have no time to work on my music career but loads of time to play angry birds four hours a day.

- Music marketing confusion if you try and do everything you will get nowhere, just focus on what you understand.

- I spend 3 hours a day reading every single piece of information and then I feel too confused to do anything just stop it, this is the evil grey zone.

You need to break out of these traps now otherwise you will get to the end of another year and your music ambition will seem even further away because you will tell yourself that you are a failure.

This is one of the main reasons that most people never make it because they never make a commitment to work at it everyday doing important tasks that will have a real impact.

Use what you learn

The first step back for the music marketing junkie is a little bit of focus. If you are working on YouTube to bring hits to your blog at the moment spend your learning time looking for bigger and better ways to become the next YouTube superhero. Then when you hit the computer next morning use what you learn.

If you just follow this simple rule you will suddenly become much more efficient because that time you spend reading now has a purpose.

If you just eat all the information like a greedy pig you will get fatter and fatter and slower and slower until you become a beached whale and will have to settle for a crappy job that will melt your brain.

Let me save your brain guys

Learn once a day in a focused area and become the master of it...SIMPLE!

Final Thoughts

To finish off this article I would like to share my commitments for this month so you might get inspired to make a few for yourself.

As I said before the worst feeling in the world is getting to the end of the year and thinking that instead of making daily progress and achieving something cool you just played Call of Duty for the whole time and are still working for a boss that you would secretly like to kill.

- Create content that matters and makes a difference.

- Help as many people as possible use their musical talent to find a happier funner life.

- Add to the Twitter and Facebook chatter rather than just spying on that dude I went to high school with.

- Blog everyday.

- Post a podcast everyday.

- Post a YouTube video everyday.

- Add valuable comment to the music marketing community.

This is what I'm doing, now it's up to you, let me know what your are committed to in the comment box below?

Look forward to hearing from you,

- Chris

Four Must Have Musical Art Objects for the Music Box and Antique Collector

There are other lovely pieces of musical art objects in addition to ballerina music boxes, music figurines, wooden jewelry boxes, and other types of music boxes and antiques that the music box and antique collector can look for. These are the musical seal, musical watches, early carillon and automaton boxes, and musical watches with singing birds and barking dogs.

Musical Seals

The musical seal is a piece of musical jewelry. The musical movement typically is one with eight notes; therefore, only very simple tunes can be played on them. They also are always made of gold and decorated with enamel and hard stones.

Because musical seals are expensive, the music box and antique collector needs to be very careful they are not purchasing a fake imitation. David Tallis in "Music Boxes: A Guide for Collectors" has this to say: "If you have any doubts about buying a musical seal, look very carefully at the stop-start slide. If the seal is a fake, you can usually see that the hole for the slide cover is cut rather crudely in the gold."

Musical Watches

Musical watches were made for those who loved "show off" accessories in the regency period. The maker of the first musical watch was Philippe Sameul Meylan, who made the watch with a radial disc type movement. The music played by most watches is Swiss traditional tunes such as "Ranz des Vaches". There also are some which play the national anthems of France and England.

Musical watches were made by a number of people such as Le Roy of Paris, Henri Capt of Geneva, and Jean Antoine Lepine of Paris to name a few.

Some musical watches are difficult and expensive to repair. Therefore, the music box and antique collector need to inspect a watch carefully before it is purchased to ensure it is in good working order and not of inferior quality.

Early Carillon and Automaton

A valuable prize for music box and antique collector would be to find a music box, which plays on bells instead of steel teeth. Finding such a box as this would be a rare find. David Tallis states: "Very few boxes appear on the open market and one of the most recent, an enameled gold box containing a carillon musical movement, fetched several thousands pounds in the salesrooms".

Watches with Singing Birds and Barking Dogs

The rarest of most musical art is the musical watch with either a singing bird or barking dog. The singing bird has the mechanisms of the singing bird in addition to normal watch functions. When a special lever is pressed, a bird appears out of the watches side and on its back all the while singing a song.

The barking dog musical watch has an animated dog which barks and is displayed when the watch hours change. This musical watch is quite rare and would be a great addition for the collection of the music box and antique collector.

For the music box and antique collector, there are other interesting and unique pieces of musical art, which can be found in addition to ballerina music boxes, music figurines, and wooden jewelry boxes. Why not expand your collection today?

Four Large Must Have Musical Boxes for Music Box and Antique Collectors

Large musical boxes have been in existence since the 1820's. For the music box and antique collector, there are four large musical boxes which are particularly unique and "a must have" for any collection. They are the mandolin music box, piccolo music box, orchestra music box, and the rare revolver music box.

Mandolin Music Boxes

Mandolin music boxes are strung with four strings, which are the same as those of a violin. The resulting sound is one of romance with the notes drifting softly in the air. These music boxes typically are not difficult to find since a large number were made. Finding a music box such as this would be a special addition to the music box and antique collector of inlaid music boxes, ballerina music boxes, musical jewelry boxes, and more.

Piccolo Music Box

While piccolo music boxes are an octave higher than most music boxes, if the music box and antique collector can withstand its rather shrill notes, it too can be a collectors jewel. Since some of these music boxes were made with a harmony arrangement that accompanied the high pitched notes, the sound becomes much more pleasing.

Orchestra Music Box

This music box is unique and has everything. The music box is an interchangeable one with bells, drums, and organ. Some even have dancing dolls inside which move in time to the music. It would be a fun music box to have for any antique or music box collector.

Revolver Music Box

The revolver music box is quite rare. It is much more unique and impressive than some of the ballerina music boxes, musical jewelry boxes, and wooden keepsake boxes seen today. David Tallis in ?Music Boxes: A Guide for Collectors states: "Perhaps the most impressive piece of machinery in the musical box field is the Revolver Music box. Invented by Amedee Paillard at St Croix in 1870, it consisted of a set of cylinders fixed on a rotating shaft so that any one could be brought into contact with the comb at time. There are three illustrations of revolver boxes in Nicole Graham Webb's book, one being a fine mandolin box by Nicole Freres. It has six cylinders, each playing six airs; a repertoire of 36 airs without table or drawers. However, they were so difficult to make that very few are to be found."

For the music box and antique collector, the mandolin music box, piccolo music box, orchestra music box, and revolver music box would be excellent collectible items. Why not add then to your collection today?
